Could Your Workout Playlist Be Putting Your Heart at Risk? The Potential Dangers of Music Boxing

Have you jumped on the latest fitness trend of music boxing?

Boxing workouts set to high-energy music have exploded in popularity, with boutique studios and at-home programs promising an fun and effective cardio workout. But could cranking up the volume during your boxing session be putting undue stress on your cardiovascular system? 💔 Some experts are concerned that the combination of loud music and intense exercise could increase risks of heart problems and even stroke, especially in individuals who already have underlying cardiovascular issues. Let's take a closer look at the science behind these claims.

What is music boxing? 🎧🥊

Music boxing is a relatively new fitness trend that combines shadow boxing moves with choreography set to loud, fast-paced music, usually at 120-140 beats per minute (BPM) or higher. Think Zumba meets kickboxing. Gyms like Rumble and BoxUnion have popularized the format, and at-home workout programs like FightCamp bring the boutique studio experience to your living room.

The appeal is clear - you get an intense cardio workout that's more engaging and fun than slogging away on the treadmill. The music keeps you energized and motivated, and the boxing moves make you feel powerful and strong.💪 Devotees claim it's an effective way to burn calories, build endurance, and relieve stress.

But is it safe? 🩺

While exercise in general is great for cardiovascular health, some doctors and researchers are questioning whether the combination of prolonged intense cardio and very loud music in boxing workouts could actually be harmful for your heart, especially for at-risk populations.

"Any time you have very loud noise, particularly music above 100 decibels, it causes a sympathetic nervous system activation. This increases your blood pressure and heart rate," explains Dr. Nicole Harkin, a board-certified cardiologist. 💓 Combined with the increased cardio output from the intense boxing workout, this could put excess strain on the cardiovascular system.

A study by the American Heart Association found that exposure to loud music with 120-139 BPM increased blood pressure and heart rate, while music at 140 BPM and above increased levels of the stress hormone cortisol. The researchers concluded that "Listening to fast music while exercising may cause irregular heartbeat and potentially dangerous arrhythmias, especially in people with established cardiovascular disease."

Additionally, Dr. Harkin notes that loud noise exposure can reduce blood flow to the inner ear, potentially impacting balance. "If someone with hypertension or vascular disease has a reduction in blood flow to the inner ear and then quickly changes position while boxing, they could get dizzy or even pass out, increasing the risk of falling or impact injuries."

Yikes! 😰 So does this mean music boxing is off-limits? Not necessarily, say experts, but you may want to take some precautions, especially if you have pre-existing heart health issues.

Reducing the risks 🩹

If you enjoy music boxing workouts but want to protect your cardiovascular health, consider these tips:

  1. Get a check-up 🩺 If you have a history of hypertension, heart disease, arrhythmia, or stroke, talk to your doctor before starting a high-intensity workout program like music boxing. They can assess your individual risk factors and advise if it's safe for you.
  2. Know the signs ⚠️ Educate yourself on the symptoms of cardiac events like chest pain, dizziness, arm/jaw pain, sudden fatigue, and shortness of breath. Stop exercise immediately if you experience any of these and seek medical attention.
  3. Turn down the volume 🎧 Opt for classes that keep the music below 100 decibels if possible. If wearing headphones, make sure the volume isn't maxed out. Noise-cancelling headphones may allow you to keep the volume lower.
  4. Stay hydrated 💧 Dehydration can tax your cardiovascular system, so drink plenty of water before, during and after your workout. Feeling dizzy or lightheaded can be a sign you need to hydrate.
  5. Listen to your body 🧘‍♀️ Don't feel pressured to push past your limits. It's okay to take breaks, modify moves, or leave early if needed. Overexertion puts added strain on your heart.
  6. Cool down and stretch 🤸‍♀️
Always include a proper cool-down to let your heart rate gradually return to normal. Stretch out muscles to avoid excess soreness and stiffness.

The bottom line 🩸 The loud music and intense cardio combo of music boxing can potentially increase risks of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular issues for some people, especially those with pre-existing heart conditions or risk factors. However, for healthy individuals who take proper precautions, music boxing can still be a fun and effective workout. The key is to know your limits, listen to your body, and put your health first. 🏥 And when in doubt, always consult your doctor. 👨‍⚕️
